Patrick Foster...Tough Guy?????

Patrick Foster, Surveyor at the Severn Partnership does Tough Guy

Congratulations to Patrick Foster, Surveyor at the Severn Partnership for the successful completion (survival) of Tough Guy: the safest most dangerous event in the World. The event that takes place once a year just outside Wolverhampton involves almost 5,000 people trying to finish the 10 mile crazy obstacle course.

The start of the insanity that is Tough Guy

The course that involves, freezing cold water obstacles, electrified fences, pitch black tunnels, mud, mud and more mud has reportedly never been conquered. Patrick managed to finish the course in just under 3 hours and 40 minutes raising over £200 for charity along with his brother Tim Foster, a medical student based in London.

Cloud Computing with Google Apps at the Severn Partnership

Severn Partnership and Cloud Computing
Severn have fully moved to the 'Cloud'.

For many years Severn have used cloud computing for many of its administrative tools such as its online schedule board. They have now fully moved to a 'Cloud' based communication system with all emails now streamed through the Google cloud system. All 30 members of staff moved smoothly to the new system, with emails converting from @severnpartnership.co.uk to @severnpartnership.com.

Severn have also recently upgraded their IT system with a state-of-the-art server with 24Gb of RAM and dual processors, 8Tb of data storage with high speed SA hard drives in a RAID system designed to achieve optimal data security.

All these improvements allow the Partnership to continue to offer Quality Data, Measured Safely and Delivered Professionally on Time.

Heritage 3D Laser Scanning, Floor & Reflective Ceiling Plans Combermere Abbey

Heritage 3D Laser Scanning for Internal building Survey
Severn were called in to undertake a high accuracy survey at the historic Comberemere Abbey Estate. The Heritage survey was focused around the estate's library, particularly its 16th century suspended plaster ceiling, which required restoration work.

The HDS Leica C10 laser scanner was ideal for the job as it could quickly produce highly accurate point clouds without the fear of damaging the historic structure further. The library and surrounding rooms were scanned and registered together to form a single point cloud. The resultant scan cloud was then used to produce highly detailed drawings of the library including floor plans, reflected ceiling plan, wall elevations and sections. These were then used to plan the restoration work.

Great Western Mainline Electrification Project - Structural Clearances

Great Western Mainline Electrification Project - Clearance for 150 Structures
Is it going to fit?

Severn Partnership has been assisting a major engineering consultancy in answering this question for 150 Structures on the Great Western Mainline as part of the Great Western Electrification Project.
Severn Partnership High Accuracy Railway Surveying

Severn Partnership Surveyors have been producing Topographical Surveys to establish Clearances for blacklisted structures and provide sufficient information surrounding the structure to allow for alteration proposals.

The 8 month long project, which ran on time saw at its peak up to 10 structures surveyed in a single night shift.

There were no incidents and Severn ensured that all the data was to the highest Quality, measured Safely and Delivered Professionally on Time.

Track Renewals - Track Alignment & Cess Detail Surveying

High Accuracy Track Alignment & Cess Detail Surveying
With the continuous need to replace rail track, the Renewal train has played a vital role in delivering this rapid renewal system.  Working alongside this, Severn has provided the high accuracy survey data critical to its continuing success.

Track Renewal Train - Railway Surveying
Recently Severn have completed over 80,975 yards (approx. 46 miles) of topographical track alignment and cess detail survey along a section of the busy WCML LNW Route.  This work produced 30 digital survey models in both MX Genio and AutoCAD formats and 373 separate SC0 files for ClearRoute Gauging Analysis.

80% of the work was carried out in a Green Zone working environment, utilising both midweek night line blockages and weekend T3 possessions.  All the work was produced to the highest quality standards and delivered professionally on time.

Crossrail High Accuracy Surveying for Tunneling Monitoring

Crossrail Amberg Kinematic Laser Scan Point Cloud - Track
As the Crossrail project starts it’s tunneling under the streets and infrastructure of London a huge amount of preparation work is going on to prevent monitor and  subsidence.

Crossrail Amberg Kinematic Laser Scan Point Cloud - Paddington
Tunneling has already begun from the Western Portal, just outside Paddington Station, where The Severn Partnership has been busy compiling a comprehensive data set to be used for the monitoring of Network Rail infrastructure as the huge Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) munch their way underneath.

Crossrail Paddington P-way Track Survey
Combining High Accuracy Leica TS30, 0.5 arc second 0.5mm, Total Stations with the latest Amberg Track Geometry Measuring Devices to coordinate every track and cross over unit on the approach to Paddington Station has provided the Crossrail team with a benchmark survey to monitor changes against. In addition a Kinematic Laser Scan Point Cloud provides a 3 dimensional model of all overhead line equipment and gantry structures prior to the TBMs passing underneath. Should any movement occur during tunneling, the entire stretch of track and infrastructure can be precisely reinstated with confidence. If all goes to plan, no one will even know the machines have been there....

3D Laser Scan to BIM - Shrewsbury Town FC

On-site 3D Laser Scanning of Shrewsbury Town FC Stadium

The Severn Partnership has embarked on the task of 3D laser scanning all of the Shrewsbury Town FC ground, internals and externals for conversion to a BIM 3D model.

The laser scanning is going to take place over a period of about a month, with teams working around Shrewsbury's busy football and conference schedule. Once the laser scans have been completed they are passed to our 3D modelling department for BIM modelling.

They are using the latest Autodesk Revit Architecture, Structure and MEP 2012 software to create the stadium into an intelligent parametric model. Due to the number and size of the scans, the point cloud has be sectioned up for ease of use and imported directly into Revit one section at a time.
Watch this space to find out more about this project in the coming weeks...

If you wish to find out more please visit our new Scan to BIM website; www.scan2bim.info or to discuss your project requirements further please email webenquiry@severnpartnership.co.uk or contact Mark King on 0844 880 8247.

Charles Darwin - Laser Scan to Mesh 3D Model

Charles Darwin Statue, Shrewsbury - 3D Laser Scan
Charles Darwin Meshed 3D Model from Scan Cloud

If someone was asked to name two things that came from Shrewsbury, they would most likely answer the Severn Partnership and Charles Darwin.  Severn recently decided to bring these two together and use their Laser Scanning expertise to laser scan the Charles Darwin statue outside the Shrewsbury Library.

The scanning was completed over one morning and registered together by the same afternoon.  This laser scan was then meshed using MeshLab, an open-source meshing software. This mesh was then refined and visualised using Autodesk 3DS Max to create a photo-realistic rendering.

Severn hopes to expand their strong links with Shrewsbury and scan more of the famously historical buildings and features of the town.
