3D Model Conversion & Visualisation - Cable Enterprise Ship

Cable Enterprise Ship 3D CAD Model Textured in 3DS Max
Severn have again been working with Global Marine Systems on 3D modelling one of their cable laying ships for their on board 3D navigation system. The Cable Enterprise is approximately 120m x 30m in size and has recently been re-fitted by Global Marine Systems.

3D Model for retro-fit of Cable Laying Ship
Severn were given solid 3D models of the majority of components on the vessel from the mechanical engineers. These were then converted to a polygon model and refined to reduce the number of polygons from 15 million to 600,000 so that the model would functioned efficiently in the navigation software. The refined model was then texture mapped and exported in the required format.

Shrewsbury Town FC: 3D Laser Scan to Revit Model

Shrewsbury Town Football Club: 3D Laser Scan to Building Information Model
Autodesk Revit Model from Point Cloud Data
Earlier in the year the Scan2BIM team at the Severn Partnership completed a project with Shrewsbury Town Football club to 3D laser scan the whole of their stadium for the creation of a Building Information Model.

The ground, named the 'New Meadow' holds 9,875 supporters and the club moved there from their old ground 'Gay Meadow' in 2007.

The site was scanned both internally and externally in 5 days using our Leica C10 laser scanner and modelled in Autodesk Revit.

For more information on Scan2BIM or to discuss your project requirements further please email: webenquiry@severnpartnership.com or contact Mark King 0844 880 8247.

Laser Scan to 3D Model for Retro-fit Design

3D Laser Scan of the Amazon factory, Swansea for retro-fit project
Rhino3D Model with Scan Cloud
Severn have recently completed a project with Gaunt Francis Architects on a scan to 3D model retro-fit project in the Amazon factory, Swansea. The factory; Amazon's largest in the UK is the size of ten football pitches and ships goods across the UK and Europe.

The project was to help the architects design a new staircase that passed through a congested area of the factory. It involved using our Leica C10 laser scanner to laser scan part of the factory. This was then used within Rhino3D to create an accurate 3D block model of all  racking, railings, MEP and building structure that may clash with the proposed staircase design.

Thank you to Gaunt Francis Architects for providing some images of the proposed staircase design.

Patrick Foster...Tough Guy?????

Patrick Foster, Surveyor at the Severn Partnership does Tough Guy

Congratulations to Patrick Foster, Surveyor at the Severn Partnership for the successful completion (survival) of Tough Guy: the safest most dangerous event in the World. The event that takes place once a year just outside Wolverhampton involves almost 5,000 people trying to finish the 10 mile crazy obstacle course.

The start of the insanity that is Tough Guy

The course that involves, freezing cold water obstacles, electrified fences, pitch black tunnels, mud, mud and more mud has reportedly never been conquered. Patrick managed to finish the course in just under 3 hours and 40 minutes raising over £200 for charity along with his brother Tim Foster, a medical student based in London.

Nick Blenkarn Presenting at WMCEE's BIM Conference on Scan2BIM
On Tuesday 31/01/12 the Severn Partnership presented at WMCEE's 'Breaking down the Barriers to BIM Adoption.' Severn discussed the use of 3D laser scanning on retro-fit, refurb and renovation projects for conversion to Building Information Models (Scan2BIM).

Congratulations goes to all the staff at WMCEE for a very well run and executed event, hopefully this is a spring board to similar events in the future. Congratulations also goes to all the speakers whose presentations were all received positively by the audience. Nick Blenkarn and Mark King from the Severn Partnership; who sit on the WMCEE BIM steering group hope to be a part of any similar events in the future.

Heritage 3D Laser Scanning, Floor & Reflective Ceiling Plans Combermere Abbey

Heritage 3D Laser Scanning for Internal building Survey
Severn were called in to undertake a high accuracy survey at the historic Comberemere Abbey Estate. The Heritage survey was focused around the estate's library, particularly its 16th century suspended plaster ceiling, which required restoration work.

The HDS Leica C10 laser scanner was ideal for the job as it could quickly produce highly accurate point clouds without the fear of damaging the historic structure further. The library and surrounding rooms were scanned and registered together to form a single point cloud. The resultant scan cloud was then used to produce highly detailed drawings of the library including floor plans, reflected ceiling plan, wall elevations and sections. These were then used to plan the restoration work.

For more information on laser scanning & surveying for heritage buildings or to discuss your project requirements further please email: webenquiry@severnpartnership.co.uk or contact Bob Hutchings on 0844 880 8247
